Ropes & Gray Decimates Staff

Bradford MaltBoston’s Ropes & Gray cut 106 staff positions, or 10% of its non-lawyer staff.

The firm made the cuts yesterday, and announced the news in a firmwide memo by Chairman Brad Malt.

Malt stated that the firm’s clients and marketplace “have been seriously affected by the continuing global economic downturn.”

Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld cut 65 staffers and Indianapolis-based Ice Miller cut about 14, or 2%, of its staff positions this month.

Reed Smith cut 115 U.S. staffers in December; Boston’s Goulston & Storrs eliminated 40 staff positions, also in December; and Boston’s Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge let nearly 60 support staff members go in November.

Ropes & Gray LLP is a national law firm with offices located in Boston, New York City, Palo Alto, San Francisco, Washington, Chicago, Hong Kong and Tokyo; and a conference center in London. The firm has over 1,000 lawyers worldwide.
